These photos were shot on a Contax T2 (my precious), using Cinestill 400D.

On our way out of Texas, we’re charging through a dust storm towards Las Cruces in New Mexico. It’s that time of the evening where my family and friends in the UK are now asleep, my phone’s gone quiet, and the world feels very big. There’s something about the dust and the last light that makes the flatness of this landscape look, well, other.

We’re stopped at a gas station outside a small city called Pecos, known for Pecos Bill and for being the home of the world’s first rodeo – the crossroads location on several old cattle and wagon trails brought the most talented cowboys to the area, who eventually competed for the title – if you must know. Craig says to me, “Look over there, people are riding horses in front of all the pylons and machinery.” Grabbing my camera, I walk across the dirt towards them. Through my viewfinder I can see the riders coming over to me… A Cowboy (Angel), along with his daughter (Lyra), tells me to hop over the fence and get on so they can take my photo. On the horse I fumbled, and the photo in question is the one above.
